The UK’s current political system is a throwback to the old days when a representative of each region was sent to the capital. Communications back then were poor, and the representative was trusted by his electorate to safeguard their interests while attending parliament. For this reason, it was impractical for the people themselves to be involved in decision-making, even in major issues affecting them, such as wars or economic disasters.
But today things are different and the system is long overdue for a good overhaul. In today’s age of world travel, blistering communications and the Internet, the process of government has conspicuously failed to move with the times. Worse, political leverage is far more acute in the age of mass media, and the public can be, and is often easily deceived. The plain fact is, we live in a country today where traditional fair-play is rarely reflected in those who govern us. The results have been crime, poverty, apathy, universal surveillance, ill-health, the unworthy judgement, the death of free speech, unpopular foreign involvements, and the highest taxes of any ‘free’ nation on Earth.
We simply don’t get a say.
That our system of government today is still termed a ‘democracy’ is ripe. You get one vote and the rest is left to the politicians. Political contempt of the public has become brazen and widespread, and it’s a two-way street. The British people are furious at not being listened to. Upset at the routine incompetence of those who govern us. Angry at being denied our say, not just on the future of our country, but on just about everything:
- On Iraq/Afghanistan
- On healthcare
- On the military
- On taxation and the economy (our money)
- On the European Union
- On the environment
- On morals and values
- On speed cameras
- On crime and punishment
- On health
- On transport
- On immigration
- On education
- On energy
- On diversity and social tolerance
